IS YOUR POOL LOSING PRECIOUS WATER?

A pool loses between 1/8″ and 1/4″ per day just due to evaporation, and maybe even more if heated a little too much. If you’re losing more than that, you most likely have a leak. If you have an automatic filling device, it may be harder to detect the leak.

Other clues that present a leaking pool:

1. Consuming more chemicals than usual

2. Higher water bills

3. Voids and cracks in the pool deck, from sub-terrain wash out

4. Flooding outside the pool shell or in the yard

Here is a DIY method to see just how much water you are losing!

PERFORMING THE BUCKET TEST:

Get the pool water to its normal level (mid-tile or mid-skimmer).

Fill a clean bucket with pool water to about one inch from the top.

  • Put the bucket on first or second step of the pool
  • Mark the water level on the inside of the bucket
  • Shut off the pump and then mark the pool water level on the outside of the bucket
  • Turn the pump on again
  • After 24 hours, compare the two water levels. If the pool water level (Outside Bucket) goes down more than the water level (Inside Bucket), there is most likely a leak.
NOTE: In order to have your pool ready, and for best results, fill your pool to the middle of the tile line or skimmer the same day of your scheduled appointment, so to ensure the underwater leak detection covers all operational areas of the pool or spa. DO NOT DRAIN YOUR POOL! Also, please make sure the pool or spa is clean and clear as the technician needs to get into the pool and will benefit from good visibility.

DO YOU HAVE A LEAK IN YOUR HOME OR OFFICE?

The best way to see if you have a house or foundation leak is by checking your water meter.

  1. Turn off all water being used inside or outside of your home.
  2. Find your water meter and check the leak indicator to see if it is moving. Depending on the brand of your meter, the leak indicator could be a small triangular shaped dial or a small silver wheel that rotates when water is flowing through the meter. If the dial is moving, most likely you have a leak.
  3. You can also take a meter reading and wait 1 or 2 hours and take another meter reading (all while your water sources are turned off). If the reading has changed, you have a leak.
  4. After you perform these tests, contact SEEK A LEAK to schedule an appointment to target the location of the leak
